"I really like this lens!" 2009-11-25
By N Doxey (UT, USA)
I use this lens with a Sony a300 and a700. I think most people who have reviewed this lens has rated it's performance outdoors as good and have been happy with it. I wish to make a few comments about the indoor performance of this lens.

I photograph the choral and drama productions of our local high school where my wife is a teacher. Everyone knows that photographing stage productions is a challenge. The poor lighting and a lot of movement leads to many disappointing shots. In the past several years I have settled on using the Panasonic FZ18 and FZ28 super zoom cameras to capture the action ( I love that the FZ28 can zoom while capturing video and I love the range) and have been pretty happy with the results.

I purchased this lens due to its value. I have been happy with it's performance outdoors. I was interested in using it during this school year. This last week I photographed the school musical, "Footloose". Oh man, action and dancing and more of the same. One evening I used the FZ18 and was happy with the pictures but discarded about 30 out of 200. Last night I used my a300 and this lens. And the results were better. I shot in "A" mode at f2.8 between 100mm to 200mm from a tripod. In fact, I was impressed with many of the shots. Some of them looked like they were shot in the studio and not from 100' away. Very nice colors and sharp. The images were not softer at 200mm. I discarded 6 out of 300. I was able to capture some of the dancing. Previous to using this lens with a DSLR I had quit trying to capture dancing unless the dancers were posing.

Now a comment about the autofocus. Yes, the lens does hunt under these conditions at times. But in every situation it did arrive at the focused image.

Most of the time it immediately focused on what I aimed at. I noticed the autofocus hunting happened the most if I was shooting at 200mm and moved to another subject quickly. I did not notice any hunting between 70mm to 150mm. I took 300 shots and it happened about 5 times. I assume the autofocus would have been faster and better with my a700. Next time, I'll try that. But, I used the slower a300 on purpose.

Overall, the valve can't be beat and the performance is good. I see no need to buy a Sony 70-200mm G lens. Would it be better? Yes! Can I get good pictures with this lens indoors under difficult conditions? Yes! I will post a few of the shots.

"A diva: great sharp macro zoom but only suitable for classic manual photography" 2009-11-11
By Nachtpfauenauge (Mainhattan)
First the good things: for this low budget price you get probably the best 70-200 mm f/2.8 optics currently on the market. According to many reviews it beats Canon's 70-200 mm f/2.8 L IS USM in that respect. As I love macro photography, it's real 1:1 macro magnification plus only 0.95 m (about 3 feet) closest distance is another outstanding feature. I shot several thousand photos with it and if I got everything right it produced amazing results.

Now the not-so-good things: its autofocus is slow, loud and inaccurate - in particular in situations with shallow depth-of-field (fully open aperture @ long tele end) you can forget about it. Finally it comes down to manual focusing like in the very old days of analogue photography. Moreover, this means that you nearly only can use it for very slowly moving subjects or stills photography - this is definitely no lens for action shootings!

Manual focusing also means that you practically cannot use this lens with a EOS 450/500D (Rebel body). With my 450D/XTi I too often ended up with frustratingly unsharp results. The small viewfinders of those mini DSLRs include no real focusing screen so the eye has no reliable information about where the focus plane really sits. Working with live view + magnification improves this situation substantially but you can only use it in typical stills photography situations with a tripod and plenty of time to prepare the shooting.

So this zoom (I call it "the diva") was one reason that made me upgrade from my EOS 450D (Rebel XTi) to an EOS 50D - and with this tool I can really use the Tamron now. I also discovered with test charts that the AF of my Tamron has a frontfocus. With the 50D I could fix that without sending it to Tamron's services.

Pros:

- excellent optics for a zoom

- even at wide open aperture already quite sharp

- real macro (if you prefer that)

- very short closest distance of only 0.95 m perfect for great macros

- manual handling okay (focus ring gear a bit steep)

- quite light for such a fast tele zoom

- distortion and vignetting overall well controlled

- excellent price-performance ratio

Cons:

- sharpness breaks down at its tele end (but this is typical for many zooms)

- in bright light with heavy contrasts chromatic aberration can be visible (but is no great issue)

- old fashioned micro motor AF drive is loud, slow and inaccurate (at least in typical macro situations you have to switch to manual focusing)

- users of other lenses with modern ultrasonic drives (like me) have always to be aware that they have to override the AF drive before they try to focus manually, otherwise they kill the AF drive

- for switching to manual focusing you pull the focus ring: nice idea but works quite roughly and chunky

- manual focusing is nothing for impatient users or fast actions as the focus ring has a quite steep gear so fine tuning isn't easy

- no image stabilization: I really started to miss this great tele feature since I use Canon's excellent 300 mm f/4 L IS USM

- my zoom collects a bit of dust behind its front lens (and using a filter slows down a fast lens)

- the AF drive of my zoom has a front focus on both Canon bodys I use.

So, finally, you get for this competetive budget price a zoom with outstandig optics and macro capability (therefore I vote 4 stars), but in every other respect an old fashioned lens only suitable for "stills-like" manual photography. I cannot recommend it for mini DSLRs of Canons XXXD/ Rebel series.

"Worth it at twice the price" 2009-10-19
By S.C.
Just got this lens last week and took it this weekend to photograph a U12 hockey game in a rink that has flourescent and fairly poor lighting. I still have some work to do learning how to really use this lens but I took some great pictures with this lens.

The biggest knock on this lens is that it is slow to focus. I did not find this to be the case at all.

The other knock on this lens is that the AF system is noisy. Granted I was in a hockey arena so I didn't notice it at all, but even taking some practice pictures in my living room I didn't think the focus system was that loud at all.

Especially when you take the price into consideration, this is a great lens. You'd pay close to double or triple the price for Canon glass with the same specs.

I researched for almost a month before I finally bought this lens. Don't waste time like me, just buy it. You won't be disappointed.

"Great Lens for Indoor Sporting Events" 2009-09-27
By J. C. (Delafield, WI)
The Tamron lens is great at stopping the action in low lighting, as typical in a gym. The detail and picture quality is crisp and bright. I frequently take pictures without the flash and find this lens works well in those situations.

The Tamrom is a bit heavy so setting it on a monopod or tripod helps stabilize the camera for focusing. Using a monopod is somewhat easier when you're sitting in school bleachers as it takes up less space than a tripod.

The 70-200mm length is just right for most gyms since you may be seated very close to the action or quite a distance. I found that if I'm right on top of the action, taking pictures from the floor gives you an interesting perspective. In this case, set your arms on your knees to make a "tripod" to keep the camera still.

An unexpected expense, was the cost of adding a quality filter ($100+). The photo store, where I print my pictures and take classes, recommended that I protect my investment by using a filter.

If you're having trouble deciding what type of lens to get, ask other photographers at the game. I spoke with a local photographer who was taking pictures at our high school volleyball game then went to his website to check out his pictures and they were great! I reviewed the properties (by right clicking on the picture) and noticed he was using a lens with a F-stop of f2.8.

After reading up on the Canon and Tamron lenses, I decided to purchase the Tamron as it was highly rated but far less money than the Canon lens. I am very pleased with the pictures taken with this lens!

"Love my new Tamron AF 70-200mm Lens" 2009-09-24
By Click Whit (Lexington, NC)
I really love my new Tamron AF 70-200 lens. The ease of going from manual to autofocus is great. I tried this lens out for the first time at a recent wedding and am pleased with the results. I have been a photographer for over 28 years and this lens, for the money, is worth it. The picture quality is ranked at the top in my experience. I would recommend this lens to anyone.

 "Detail" 2009-09-29
By L. Smith
All summer I have been taking pictures of dragonflies and damselflies. The detail is amazing!

I can see the hair on the legs of dragonfly! Wonderful! A little slow to focus sometimes but overall the picture quality is so much better than a Tamron my spouse was using.

 "There's a reason it's been around for a while" 2009-05-17
By Isaac E. Harrell (Richmond, VA 23220)
With the constant release of new lenses, it's impressive to find a reasonably-priced zoom with staying power. The Canon EF 100-300 is one of those lenses, maintaining it's position in their lineup for over a decade. While it cannot compete with the L-series lenses, especially the 70-200 f/2.8, it offers a great range within a reasonable price. On a DSLR with low-noise at higher ISO setting, bringing up the ISO is a fair trade for the performance it offers. True, I drool when I look at the 70-200 models, but this one has been a constant and trustworthy companion for events, especially when shooting outdoor events where I prefer a low profile for more effective candid shots. While my next purchase will probably be a 70-200, there's no way I would give this one up.

 "Not for me" 2009-02-12
By L. Jones (Johnson City, NY United States)
This is not a lens for anyone shooting events indoors.

It MAY be great for those of you who don't mind using flash, but I really try not to (preference here). So, others like it and keep in mind the type of photography you do and take it for a test drive - returned.

"I'm no expert, but I really love this lens..." 2008-05-19
By Jimmy! (Florida Panhandle)
I'm no professional, but I love taking photos. I have the XTi and only have two lenses so far: the 28-105 and this one, the 100-300. In reading several reviews, I seem to not be alone in this setup.

Overall, I absolutely love this lens and haven't had any problems with it in the six months I've had it. My images stay pretty sharp throughout the zoom range and I rarely have light problems. Most notably, I recently used this lens to shoot an evening choir concert at the church where I work. Despite the low light and the distance, I was able to get some well balanced, crisp, and well-lit shots of the people singing.

If you're just the average joe-photographer looking for a great telephoto zoom, I'd very highly recommend this lens. If you're any sort of professional, read the more intelligent reviews around here for the information you're looking for.

Though it can take some time to learn to use it, it has been very helpful in taking pictures that can't be taken with a normal point and shoot.

The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Sigma 120-400mm telephoto zoom lens covers a telephoto range of up to 400mm, letting you bring almost any subject close for short-perspective shots. The lens employs Sigma's original Optical Stabilizer (OS) function, which gives you access to shutter speeds approximately four stops slower without blurring the image. As a result, you can capture low-light, long-distance shots such as football plays, wildlife profiles, and landscape scenes without using a tripod for each photo. In addition, the lens incorporates a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) for quick, high-speed autofocusing, along with a rear focus system that guarantees optimum image quality throughout the entire zoom range. And photographers will love the three special low dispersion (SLD) glass elements, which correct for chromatic aberration, and the super multilayer lens coating, which reduces flare and ghosting. Other details include a minimum focusing distance of 59.1 inches, a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.2, and support for optical 1.4x EX DG APO and 2x EX DG APO tele converters.

 "A good lense" 2009-10-26
By B. Wirths (Long Island NY)
I love this lense, use it every chance I get (outdoors) typically a slow lense. I gave it 4 stars due to the fact is seems a bit contrasty to me. But all in all outdoors I love it.

"Great lens... great product @ the right price.." 2009-09-08
By Tiong Guan Chng (Plano TX USA!)
just got the lens a week ago ! did a photo shoot in an Airshow here in Dallas Area and the performance was great. picture is clear if I do my part ! I find it easier when I mount the lens on the monopod. I push the shutter speed right to 1200 and all pic came out good. lens is a bit heavy but managable. focusing is fast and I like the twist zoom over the Canon 100-400L. I have use both and could not fault this lens over the canon and of course the cost of the Sigma is like $700 cheaper too! I use it on my Canon 40D and picture is good! a bit on the softer side at 400mm! other than that, I am a happy camper.

 "Sigma 120-400 f4.5 - f5.6 HSM Exceeded my expectations" 2009-07-28
By Bob in USA (USA)
I just received my Sigma 120-400mm Lens and I am very satisfied with this product. I had read a lot of reviews on the lens and most were very favorable reviews. But you never know till you see it for yourself. I am happy to report that it is plenty sharp enough for my needs and I like the colors and contrast I am getting with this lens. I did adjust focus using the AF fine tune feature on the D700 to -15 and I am ready to go. If you want to see some photos taken with the Sigma 120-400 lens type bc1963 photos in your search engine and select my flickr photostream.

 "Lens for all Seasons" 2009-07-15
By Woody Pollock (Suburban Philadelphia-Go Eagles!)
I am a recovering pro shooter (semi-retired) and bought this lens to shoot my grandchildren in sports activities. I have fallen in love w/it. It is the largest of 4 Sigma lenses for my Nikons (2-300's, 1-200) and I bought it on a whim. WOW! Nice and crisp, can be handneld even by 66 year-old shooter! OS is not overly noisy, certainly not distracting and has given me the freedom from tri/mono-pods for daylight sports, F2.8 isn't necessary in sunlight for me. I saved a bundle, built a rep as the greatest G-Pop and compromised nothing in the process. BTW, I have some wonderful wildlife shots as well, since I live within a mile of the Delaware River.I recommend this lens w/o equivication under the uses I have put it to. Is it the best? No, but w/o it I couldn't have gotten the images I have. That's the best.

 "Great lens on a Canon 50D" 2009-06-23
By RHN1070
One of the major reasons I got the lens was to take candid, hand-held, action shots of boats and the people in them. My platform for taking the pictures would be a rolling, pitching boat. After a month of using the lens, I am well-satisfied with its abilities. I usually use ISO settings of 1000 or higher. Output is to a website photo gallery or print rarely larger than 8.5" x 11". Graininess has not been an issue with the Canon 50D. The other lens I was considering was the Sigma 200-500. I decided in favor of the Sigma 120-400 because of the 77mm filter size (I already have a bunch), size/weight, concern that 200 was large a lower end and 500 likely difficult to hand-hold in a boat.

I relied heavily on Amazon reviews and other reviews in making my selection. One Amazon reviewer noted that the lens was shipped in a box with virtually no protection. This was my experience as well. The lens came through fine, contrary to my expectation when I first opened the box.

 "Good Value" 2009-10-12
By Keith
I've been using this lens for three weeks now shooting marching band competitions, both day and night. Daytime shooting with the lens is great... Good sharp images with no blurring. Shooting under the stadium lights is a little tougher. On full zoom motion becomes a problem, but zoomed out the shots are still very clear.

The lens was a little stiff at first, but has loosened up with use. I do find that in certain situations (very busy shots) the focus drifts from target to target, and occassionally the camera can't lock on.

I use the lens with a D60 and can't hesitate to recommend it to anyone for casual use.

Nice lens, great price.

    Product Description

Hoods are one of the most important accessories for each lens you own. A lens hood provides multiple functions: it shades the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality; in inclement weather, it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens; and it protects the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles.

     "Canon EW63ll Lens Hood" 2009-06-06
    By Timothy D. Heitman (Colorado)
This lens hood works very well. I think being plastic is a good thing. Keeps weight down, and is slightly flexible. Stores nicely on the lens, and I also like the flat lining to prevent light scatter. Highly recommended.

"Lens hood is a must" 2009-04-13
    By A. Gonzalez Arquieta
If you are serious about photography, then you should use a lens hood to eliminate stray light and improve colors and contrast. Cannon hoods work fine.

"Yes this fits the XSI !!!" 2009-02-12
    By Leonard Eng
OK so I have looked everywhere for this type of hood and wanted it from Canon. Thanks to Amazon I got it and a great deal. The hood does fit the 58mm lens on the Canon XSI and does a great job at blocking extra light even with the long range lens I have. It pops off and on easily for both lenses and flips backwards for storage on the lens. Works with filter and end cap.

Thanks for a great deal amazon. Not bad for 23 and change. Half of what other camera shops wanted to charge me.

A plus for all XSI owners.

     "Decent lens hood" 2008-11-22
    By Leigh Ann Smith
Not a bad lens hood. I like the connection to the lens barrel makes it quick to install or remove. A tad flimsy compared to other lens hoods, but unless it takes a fiar impact it should suffice.

"a little expensive, but worth it!" 2008-09-19
By Trinity Shi (Columbus, OH USA)
This lens hood is very well made, but a little expensive. It is worth it in the long run because it protects your lens from accidental dings and absorbs shock. The inside of the hood is lined with black felted material that helps absorb unwanted light.

    Pros: felted interior, high quality

    Cons: costlier than other brands

     "Great bag for D90 " 2009-01-29
    By Michael Gill (Orlando, FL)
I purchased this bag for a Nikon D90 and it has worked very well. It has a clever side load system allowing you quick access to the camera by unzipping the cover only partially and to the whole compartment when fully unzipped. The main compartment stores the camera with a small zoom and lens hood attached. I carry a flash unit and an ac/dc power supply but the power supply could easily be another lens. There is a good size top compartment for accessories and several zippered pouches for cleanning equipment, spare batteries, cables and the like.

The bag is a sling shot type bag, meaning that it has a single shoulder strap which is very comfortable. For 'day trippin'" the bag feels fine just placing the strap over your shoulder. For a more secure feel, there is a strap that runs around the back, holding the pack tight and keeping it from slipping off.

The bag is well built with well designed use of space. If it is big enough for your equipment, I highly recommend this bag.

     "Great camera bag!" 2009-01-28
    By K. Depew
I spent a lot of time searching for the right camera bag and found that the sling bag was really the way to go. The sling makes it so easy to access your equipment without having to take it off or reveal all that you have in the bag. The bag looks great, and has a lot of pockets for extra gear. After searching for a camera bag for a long time I was conflicted between spending a lot more money for one that had good reviews or taking a chance on a much cheaper one that didn't have any reviews yet but looked nice. I am so happy that I chose this bag and am happy to give it a great review for others who are looking as I was.

     "Good" 2009-06-01
    By Jeffrey Travis
Very good starting lens i got this lens for my first DSLR the nikon D60 I reccomend you buy this lens.

"Great lens at an affordable price, amateur oriented!" 2009-03-29
    By A. Mendez (FL)
Lens delivers for its price tag.

Yes its true, it will not capture front cover National Geographic photos nor pocket camera mediocre results.

The main advantage is the additional zoom range, making good for portraits and has some wide angle for those spontaneous group photos.

The lens tends to get lost in details at its widest range of 28mm when is very sunny and focusing to infinity, the Nikon D60 meter does not adjusts well on these light conditions. I leave the wide angle nature photos to the 18-55 giving better results.

I did some testing at a birthday Playground party (sunny, cloudy day), +1 in sharpness, WB to partly cloudy set at zero. I played every now and then with Under Over exposure; +0.3,.7 when cloudy and -.3-.7 when very sunny. This lens likes to give very saturated colors so try to leave it on Normal, not vivid colors or will be super rich reds, greens.

Portraits: I find this lens does well in this category, if the light is right good details, tones can be achieved with blurry backgrounds at 80mm, remember to use the lens hood. The lens delivers well on portraits, I love it for such a cheap lens, colors come out very good. I retouch many photos on Elements 6 and Camera Raw giving it darker values to shadows and highlights to white areas. Good details are revealed by lowering saturation and contrast with no weird out of focus backgrounds.

It may be me, but I have experienced adjusting the Image and quality to Medium instead of Fine gives better results, I guess less is more in this case.

Close ups with the built in iTTL flash are extremely good, details are excellent, I found the lens to deliver easy and without any much processing with flash and set on Auto, piece of cake.

Overall: very good lens, feels sturdy. I have heard bad comments about plastic lens mount, but the Nikon 18-55 is also plastic. I wish the focusing ring was smoother and zoom be linear instead of rotational, makes it hard to manual focus on moving objects like sports etc. I recommend this lens

This lens gives a very pro look to your camera especially with the lens hood on. Do not worry, this lens DOES NOT look cheap or in other words, it does not look like a 70 dollar lens. I replaced the Tamron lens cap for a Nikon one :-)...

     "Standard" 2009-01-15
By Alex Geller (Monterey Bay, CA)
Lens arrived on time with fine packing. The lens so far is doing what I ask it to do. On a few night time shots the light source (Street light) appeared to be star shaped. Like a twinkle but I'm not positive if that's the lens or not.

I needed a versatile lens for cheap and that's exactly what I got. I'm happy with it so far.

     "Great Walkaround lens!" 2008-10-09
    By
Got this to replace my nikkor 18-55 lens as it starts to have problem taking night shots and wanted a set of lens for walkaround. I have taken over hundred pics since received it 2 days ago. Tack sharp pictures with superb accurate colours. Comparable with my old nikkor kit lens in terms sharpness and colours. Love the range and will be using it for my friend's wedding soon as backup wedding photographer. Excellent for sceneries shots esp day and night. Set ISO to 800 for night sceneries and got excellent detail pictures. This must be my next best lens after my nikkor 50mm f1.8 fast lens. Best buy for this price!

"Great Lens for the Price" 2008-07-22
    By D. Regenold
This is an excellent lens for the price it is set at. If you are a budget photographer you need to add this lens to your collection. The AF system is a little sketchy in low light situations, but it still works great. Also, the lens has the prefect zoom range to be your default "walk-around" lens. This is just a great piece of glass for the price. Highly recommended.
