 "Great portrait lens, usual chromatic abrasion" 2009-05-08
By Robert K. Johnson (Rexburg, ID)
* Its expensive

* It's a prime lens

* It's SUPER fast (great low light shooting)

* Chromatic abrasion can be a nuisance in certain lighting conditions but from what I found [...] it is to be expected with a portrait lens although this lens may be more prone to the issue

* I love it, it has added many more possibilities to my photography and I recommend a UV filter also

 "Excellent lens" 2009-05-03

This is an excellent lens. Something you should have for your alpha. Colors are extremely bright and vivid. Sharpness is also top notch. With a lens like this, who needs a tripod? For daily shooting, that is.

Although background blur is a bit harsh at 1.4, but it's quite helpful if you badly need it at lowlight situations and you don't want to increase your ISO.

The metal bayonet is also great. Unlike the plastic kit lens. I've seen one kit dslr bumped to somebody and the kit lens just broke off. Sad.

It's also sometimes annoying that you have to move farther to make the shot. Not really recommended for group shots at tight spaces. But hey, if you want a great shot, you really have to move.

All in all, a great lens to have around. If you just purchased your alpha, then you SHOULD have this one next on your list.

 "Tack Sharp and Useful Focal Length" 2009-03-04

This lens is tack sharp and provides beautiful color reproduction. The size and weight are convenient for frequent use, and the focal length on a camera with an APS-C

size sensor is very useful for both portraits and general photography. For all its qualities, and at the Amazon price, this lens is an exceptional value in the Sony lineup of lenses.
